I last minute decided we needed to do a quick trip to Edinburgh because Scotland had made it so people were allowed to eat indoors and England hadn’t yet. Yes, I chose to book a 5 hour train trip just so we could eat out. I booked our train tickets from Bury St Edmunds where we live to Edinburgh for about £200 for the 4 of us on LNER (Friends and Family rail card which paid for itself this trip), leaving on Thursday and coming back on Sunday. I also was able to book 3 nights at the Premier Inn City Centre Royal Mile. The location was decent and close to the Royal Mile and Train Station. I do prefer the Princes St area hotels though.
Thursday: We woke up and took at 10am train towards Edinburgh switching in Peterborough. The trains were a mess due to structural issues that were discovered on the type of train we were going on. No social distancing at all. Can I also just say how much I hate the Peterborough train station? They don’t have anywhere to easily get drinks, you have to leave the whole station and go to the supermarket outside. But we made and it, checked into our hotel and I was very happy to eat my Hard Rock for dinner.
Friday: I really wanted to go somewhere new this trip and this was the best day weather wise. We took the train from Edinburgh to Leuchars. From there it was easy to catch the bus to St Andrews. We waited maybe 1 or 2 minutes for the bus. I considered originally booking a day tour with Rabbies or Timberbush to St Andrews but it was about 25% the cost to do it on our own. With our English Heritage pass I was able to book the Cathedral and Castle for free (AKA already paid for). We had amazing weather, walked all over and the waterfront was beautiful!
Saturday: The weather this day was pretty questionable. It was pretty dreary. I decided to book us tickets to Camera Obscura. We went last year but my husband wasn’t with us and it’s perfect for a rainy day. After we went for a walk and had a late lunch at Wahaca, my go to place for fake tacos. It was delicious as expected. I did a little shopping and walked around the Royal Mile some and we were going to walk around the bottom of Arthur’s Seat when the rain started coming down so we left early and did fast food for dinner.
Sunday: We decided to eat breakfast at Wetherspoons. It was a disappointment with no full menu. We then got the train and headed home. A quick, but nice weekend away.
